BC Breed - A Working Standard

The graceful, agile Border Collie exhibits substance and stamina in a medium, well-balanced body. It's gait varies from a smooth trot to a crouching stalk, depending on its activity.

The Border Collie's intelligent and intense eye come in a full range of browns, from light to dark. Light brown or blue eyes may be preferred for working stock.

Heights may range from 19 to 22 inches males and 18 to 21 inches for females, as long as balance and moderation are maintained.

The head is in proportion to the body, with erect or semi-erect ears and a strong jaw designed for gripping stock.

Well-angulated or laid-back shoulders allow the Border Collie to crouch and creep along, low to the ground, and pounce when necessary.

The topline is relatively level, but may have a slight rise in the loin, allowing for quicker turns and ease in crouching.

The low-set, rudder-like tail is carried low while working, helping the dog to balance while making tight turns.

Forelegs are well-boned and parallel when viewed from the front, with pasterns lightly sloping when viewed from the side.

Hocks may be straight or slightly turned in to aid in quick turns and allow the dog to get up and down faster. They are moderately let down, but not so low as to hinder speed.

The hind legs are set close together with a long stifle.
