Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - Don't be fooled by its workaholic demeanor - a Border Collie still offers plenty of love and affection.

My Personal Favourite Quote!

My Personal favourite - "His work ethic will astound, his intelligence will amaze and his great loyalty will endear him to you forever."

Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - Without one-to-one interaction from you, a Border Collie will be forced to find its own fun.

Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - Although the breed standard may fault the lack of eyes rim pigmentation and not preferring blue eyes but allowing 'the full range of brown eyes,' from light to dark), subtle differences in head shape, ear set, eye set and bite may certainly tweak herding ability. Unofficially, show ring judges tend to prefer the darker, expressive eyes while working people believe the lighter eye may be more intimidating to stock.

Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - The Farmer's Friend - With his inherited herding instinct, the Border Collie has proved indispensable to may farmers. An appropriately trained Border Collie will collect the farmer's flock and, using specific herding techniques, will eventually work the sheep into their holding pen. When searching for a Border Collie to work with, farmers will always look at a dog's intelligence and trainability rather than its physical appearance.

Border Collie Bits!

5 fast Facts on Border Collie:

1 - Personality: This personality-plus breed is as loyal as they come and is happiest when he has a job to do. If left to become bored and unstimulated, he can be destructive in the house and garden.

2 - Suited to: Individuals who have the time to walk, train and play with their Border Collie and also the energy to keep up with this active dog.

3 - Favourite activities: 'Catch' will rate as one of the best games ever, but agility, flyball, obedience and other competitive dog sports will rate just as highly for this work-loving dog. Being kept both physically and mentally stimulated, and being close to its owner, will make for a happy dog.

4 - Watchdog qualities: Border Collies are not known as an effective guard dog breed, but they are protective of their family and will bark if a stranger approaches the house.

5 - Backyard requirements: Being an active breed, the Border Collie will need space to run around and exercise. Make sure your yard is adequately fenced as this dog will even scale a six-foot fence if he thinks the other side is more interesting.

Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - Walk with Care: When walking your Border Collie, make sure he is always on a leash
unless you're in a safe off-leash park. Due to this dog's strong herding instincts, you may find him take
off after a car, a flock of birds or even a group of kids as he tries to 'herd' them into a corner. While it
may seem amusing to some, this behaviour is dangerous for those being 'herded' and especially dangerous
if your dog ends up under the wheels of the car he's trying to herd onto the pavement!

Let's get Physical

If you're looking for a dog with brains, a sense of humour and the ability to outwit you in almost every game, the Border Collie is the canine you've been waiting for. With his eye-catching appearance and the ability to amaze in almost everything he does, this energetic pooch is a dream dog for those who have the time and energy to keep up with him, whether you live on the land or are city dweller.

Care of the Breed!

Care of the Breed - Daily: At least two walks a day are a must to keep this dog satisfied and healthy, as well as all the games you can throw at him. A well-balanced diet is essential as is a constant supply of fresh water.

Border Collie Bits!

In 116AD, a Roman named Marcus Terentius Varro was credited with having written many works on pastoral matters, including one on the care and training of the shepherd's dog. The word collie has several possible origins. The Gaelic term for anything useful is "collie." That would certainly have been an appropriate word to refer to this dog, which is useful at whatever it puts its mind to. The word for anything black is "coly."

Border Collie popularity exploded in the 1990s when the movie Babe (1995) was released. At the same time, the Border Collie acquired the distinction of being the "most trainable," only adding to its desirability. Unfortunately, many people didn't realize that with that trainability came loads of intelligence and energy, and many Border Collies ended up in shelters or with breed rescue groups, a problem that still exits today.

Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - Very people-orientated dogs, Border Collies don't miss an opportunity to do things with their owners. Today's Border Collies are likely descendants from a handful of influential sires known for their working abilities and stable temperaments.

Good news......puppies go their new home!

Good news! Puppies will be leaving to their new home in 1-2 weeks time. Wishing them a fantastic life together, sharing the unforgettable, the non-replaceable life journey together. How can your life be boring with Border Collie?

Lilac Merle!!

After a week of observation, we now officially confirmed, that BEN X HERSHEY Puppies has CHOCOLATE Colour in their Merle! That will make Hershey's litter LILAC MERLE!!! Buttons, Haven, Passion, Salvia and Jacob, all have the shapes of CHOCOLATE ...... how cool is this.

Collie Types

The Collie was probably derived from the Border Collie, perhaps with some cross-breeding from Borzois and Irish Setters. Today's conformation Collie was developed in Britain in the mid-19th century from working collies of the day. In those days, Collies looked very much like the Border Collie of today, says Presberg.

The same is true of the English Shepherd, the Australian Shepherd and the McNab. These breeds are all cousins, says Presberg.

Border Collie Bits!

Border Collie Bits - Because the breed's No. 1 purpose is herding sheep, the Border Collie's look can vary considerably.

Benefits of Crate Training

We are reaping the benefits of crate training. All puppies can be left in the crate for the night and only get them out for pee and poop in the next morning. All puppies can hold their bladder throughout the night. We are thrilled to have back our clean and nice room and puppies seems happy in their crates.

Don't buy blindly!

Anyone not buying from a reputable breeder risks being sold a dog or puppy who is not what the seller suggests. People who buy puppies from pet shops not only encourage puppy farms to breed more puppies but are more likely to purchase 'stock' dogs who can be in poor health and have underlying stress problems, not to mention a higher risk of genetic disease.

DiamondIsle Kennels Profile

DiamondIsle Kennels
- Can one ever have enough Border Collies??

DiamondIsle Kennels was formed on September 2002. The Kennel was registered with Singapore Kennel Club on December 2002. DiamondIsle was hatch, when we started keeping Border Collies in June 2001. At that time, we bought a Male BC, named Black Diamond Maximillion., aka Max.

Max was introduced into our home in mixed feelings. One camp wanted him to be just a Pet, while the other camp wanted him to be an Obedience Dog. Very soon, we embarked into dog training and since then, there was no turning back. The word Show Dog came into our mind and eventually we bought a Female from a reputable Kennel in Australia. Marsean Mikah was her name (aka Mikah), we are very happy and indebted to these Responsible & Excellent Breeders that produced Max & Mikah for their superb structure & excellent temperament.

After being on the receiving end of such wonderful dogs, we were motivated to start a Kennel to do just that. Improving the Breed Standard, temperament & excellent lineage of Quality Border Collies. Is with such commitment, we work on both the Obedience & Conformation Rings to bring out the best of our Border Collies. For their achievements pls refer to Hall Of Fame!!

We are just few, but dedicated & committed Border Collies Breeders in Singapore. Should you have any queries, please email to diamondisle@gmail.com. We will be happy to response to you.

Coincidently we owned an Australian Shepherd too. Her name is Keesha, My Sapphire So Blue, aka Keesha. We may be interested to breed Aussies in the future.

We are also setting a good example for an urban city Singapore that is in an urbanized city we could still breed quality Border Collies for serious dog owners.

Reaping the benefits of BARF!!

With the introduction of BARF for about 3-4 days to Hershey's Puppies, we are seeing and reaping the benefits of BARF. The pees and shits of the puppies are so much less potent and smell. It makes cleaning and clearing their whelping box a breeze. I believe it will be so much benefits, if the new owners take on the BARF diet too.

Feeding on individual food bowl!

This morning we decided to start feeding hershey's puppies on their individual food bowls. A very good head-start for these young ones. At least we can ensure all puppies are feed equally.

Art of indication!

I was told by Debra that today Guinness indicated twice for water, she look at Debra and bring her attention and pointed where the water bowl was; on top of a side cupboard.... she is amazing ....... "Cool Guinness"

Haven showing her Retrieving and forward momentum Skills!!! Enjoy this video.

2nd Adult Socialization Session

Puppies are growing so fast and they are able to hold their bladder longer and their attention span are getting longer and stronger. This batch of litter are so full of drive and energy. Now we need to work them out for almost 2 hours before they are willing to sleep.

We did our 2nd socialization session with our other adult girl Aunty Millie. Aunty Millie was nervous seeing these rumbustious puppies, wagging their tails off, inviting her to play. And Aunty Millie jumped on top of my shoulder to keep the puppies out of reach, this is hilarious!!! Aunty Millie are getting use of our puppies present, but it will take time to allow them to integrate seamlessly.

Anyway, Aunty Millie has mastered a NEW STUNT, jumping on my shoulder and keeping balance for a long time.

Car-Ride day for C-litter

This week, we are going to expose all our C-litter to Car-ride. Even-though they did had a car-ride when they were just 1 day old during they very first vet visit. So this session hope to ease the puppies anxiety on car-rides, so that the new owners will not face car-sickness or puppies reluctant to go for car-ride. Car-ride should be very fun.........

Adult Socialization Session

tonight we had a Grandma's Mikah and meet the individual pup session, all have shown good interaction with adult dogs...invitation to play, climb over mikah, bite her paws, bite her tail, lick mouth and ears, all in all a good quality time with Mikah.... thumb up for this socialization session..

Good Manners 101

Today, teached puppies to accept hand feeding of dog treats, taught sit and down and stand with food treats as lure and the puppies dig it.

Good Routine

Puppies have fallen into a good routine, lights out means sleeping time till daybreak. When we come to the box an automatic sit to get patted. Puppies seeking attention gets ignored.

Success in weaning off our puppies

Great news, we have successfully wean off our puppies from mama's milk. And now they are feeding on dry kibble for all their meals. We are on target to wean off our puppies at 6 weeks and this help them in their transition to new homes.

This might be what Haven will look like when she grows up!

These pictures are what haven will potentially look like. And these are Agility Champions.

Busy holiday for Hershey's Pups!

Today is a busy holiday for the puppies. We have friends from Malaysia and Singapore came to visit us and our puppies. This time round, the parents join in the fun. It is really interesting to see both Parents, Hershey and Benji willing to offer their beloved toys to their puppies to invite them to play, they actually pick up the toy and present it in front of the puppy, parents love is very strong. Really and "Awwww" moment there.

In & Out - Puppies adventure

All our puppies were brought out yesterday and today, being as a lone pup or in a pair of 2. The 6 of them have shown great characters, drives, determination and courage. They played tug outside of their whelping box too, showing great drives. All puppies were very curious and explore the whole of our living room and kitchen.

After these 2 days observation, all puppies have great drive, attentiveness and ability to rebound in different situations. Once again I am very confident that this litter will excel in Performance Home, be it Agility, Flyball, Obedience, Frisbee, Rally etc

This C-litter are all having very good drives. Haven, Salvia, Angel, Passion, Jacob and Buttons all shown very excellent drives in playing tugs. Very interestingly this litter give us a solid eyes contact; every time they heard us near their whelping box, Buttons, Jacob, Passion, and Angel will be the first to come forward and look at us expectantly, they sit and look up at her, so cute! This litter will be suitable to performance home.

Here is another video on tugging with Angel, enjoy!

We also have a good rub down on our puppies, wash them and powder them, making all the puppies so clean, so good to smell, lovable and hug-able.

Our puppies will be available for viewing soon, if you are interested in our puppies please email us at diamondisle@gmail.com.

A week into Solid feeding

It's been a week since we started feeding our C-litter with solid feeds. They all seems to be very happy to enjoy the best of both worlds - Solid Food & Mama's Milk! Pups were very satisfied with the interchangeably feeding of Solid Feeds and Mama's Hershey's Milk. All pups have grow so fast and they are so much fun to play with now.

C-litter wild adventure photos

C litter wild exposure@231010

This morning, we decided to let our C-litter have their first taste of the actual environment. They were all taken out to our garden to have their first wild ride of the environment. Given the haste has been real bad lately, we only allow about 5 minutes of exposure.

Hot, humid, dry, sight, sound, sun, birds etc all types of exposure were present to stimulate their senses. This week is also a great opportunity to let them interact of their kinds, so we will arrange for the pups to see the adults shortly.

Photos of this wild adventure will be uploaded soon. Keep watch this space!

Hershey's litter @ 21 days old

Hershey's Litter @ 21 days

17.10.10 is Hershey's litter 21 days old, we have done our weekly weight measurement, and they are into their 1,515 grams on average. Very good sign that they have growth healthy.

We are also introducing them for the 1st their solid meal and they have responded to it positively. We will also be doing our 2nd de-worming tomorrow. The 1st de-worming was done a week ago. A video of their 1st feed on solid food will be ready soon, hope you enjoy the video.

Now they are all very responsive, playing with their litter-mates, their toys and us. Each pup seem to have found a sparing partner, Buttons match with Angel; Salvia match with Jacob; & Haven match with Passion ....leaving mama hershey be the referee.

Names for our 3rd litter

Thanks to one of our good friend, she has recommended us to name them after the blue flowers. Here are what we have chosen;

1) DIAMONDISLE HEAVENLY BLUE, "HAVEN"
2) DIAMONDISLE VICTORIA BLUE SALVIA, "SALVIA"
3) DIAMONDISLE ANGEL WING BEGONIA, "ANGEL"
4) DIAMONDISLE IRIS DARK PASSION, "PASSION"
5) DIAMONDISLE BACHELOR'S BUTTON, "BUTTONS"
6) DIAMONDISLE JACOB'S LADDER, "JACOB"

The name with the "---" will be their call-names.

Diamondisle 3rd litter was born on 26 SEPT 2010

Our long awaited 3rd litter from Diamondisle Loch-N-Legasi AD,PS1,PJ1 and Diamondisle Crystal Blue was born on 26th September 2010. Labour started around 8pm where hershey is screaming in pain, nesting inside her whelping box. By about 10pm, a full collar 1st female blue merle pup was born. Hershey was a natural, her mother instinct took over and she clean her pup and biting off the umbilical cord.

At 10.42pm, the 2nd pup a non full collar blue merle female pup was born. Her marking is very different form the firstborn. Hershey goes into cleaning her and bite off the umbilical cord. During the resting period, we manage to help the 2 new born nurse from the mother's milk, which will be build up their defense system against infection.

At 11.33pm, the 3rd pup was born, this time is a red colour female pup, very happy to see red puppy. Before we can finished cleaning her up, at 11.45pm, the 4th blue merle female pup was born. This is the smallest litter by far. Think they could have share the same placenta. Hershey is so busy cleaning up both the Red and the Blue Merle pups.

Cuckoo Cuckoo, we were into the next day 27 September 2010. At 12.30am, the 5th pup and finally a boy blue merle was born. This is a huge boy.

At 12.53am, the 6th the last pup was born. Guess what, the last is also a boy, a very neatly marked blue merle boy.

When we put all the 6 litters back to hershey, she was overwhelmed, don't know how to attend to.......and before you realize it she has become a good and natural mother.
